Snow squalls, reinforcing cold blast to lead into the weekend

Temperatures have dropped off significantly in the wake of a cold front passage early yesterday morning – It’s nearly 15 to 20 degrees colder from 8 am Thursday to 8 am Today. 9:00 AM temperatures were in the upper 20s and low 30s across the state and daytime highs will not exceed the mid 30s. It’s breezy with a northwest wind gusting to 20 mph at times, but nowhere near as windy as it was yesterday. Continue reading

March begins stormy, turning colder

Across Connecticut temperatures are in the upper 40s and low 50s this morning behind a renewed surge of milder and more humid air. This has resulted in the formation of advection fog statewide, with visibilities dropping below a quarter mile in much of the southern half of the state, aiding by light southerly winds coming off the water.  Continue reading

November 15, 2016 Forecast Discussion

Upper Level: 500mb trough slides east through Thursday before eventually becoming cutoff offshore to the east. Ridging builds in from the west while a new trough digs in the central plains. That trough will amplify and tilt negatively as it moves into the northeastern states by the end of the weekend.

Surface: Weak low pressure tracks through eastern New England later today. As it departs, some cooler air will briefly move in for the day on Wednesday. High pressure with a more substantial mild air push will build in for Friday and Saturday. Low pressure tracking towards the great lakes will drag a cold front our direction Sunday. A new surface low will try to develop along the front as it pushes through New England.

Forecast: Rain ends this evening. Clearing and turning cooler over night. Sunny and cool Wednesday with continued sunshine and warming temperatures Thursday through Saturday. Clouds, cool weather and a few showers return Sunday.

Tonight: Rain ends, gradual clearing. Lows 40-45.

Upper Levels: 500mb shortwave trough approaches the northeast on Tuesday before eventually passing through by Thursday evening. Upper level ridging will build in behind it for the end of the week as a significant mild air push arrives.

Surface: Weak low pressure tracks off the Carolinas this evening northeastward into our region by tomorrow. High pressure will build behind it gradually from the west.

Forecast:

Tonight: Increasing clouds this evening with periods of rain developing by daybreak. Lows 40-45.

Tomorrow: Periods of rain, briefly heavy during the mid morning hours. Breezy. East winds 10-15 mph becoming northeast late. Highs 50-55.

Tomorrow night: Rain ends. Breezy with a northwest wind 5-10 mph becoming west. Low near 45.

October 2016 Precipitation Summary

Eastern Connecticut sees some drought relief courtesy of a concentrated drenching. The same storm that delivered the first snowfall of the season to many across the state, brought the first drought denting rainfall in a long time for New London and Windham Counties.
