A strong thunderstorm and a weekend heat wave

Noon Update: A heat wave is forecast for today through Tuesday for most of Connecticut. Isolated thunderstorms today*, falling humidity tonight with a sunny and hot weekend to follow. Humidity builds again Sunday night with a warm front passage. Hot and humid Monday then a cold front passage Monday night will help to knock the humidity down a bit by Tuesday and finally help break the heat wave by Wednesday.

  • A strong to severe thunderstorm is possible
    • Gusty winds and heavy rain main threats
  • they will be limited in coverage
  • most likely timeframe 4pm-11pm

Discussion: A pair of shortwave disturbances approach New England today and tomorrow. The first locally late this afternoon and evening, and the second passing through northeastern New England during the day on Saturday. Warm humid southwesterly flow out ahead of a weak cold front combined with partial sunshine should be sufficient to destabilize the boundary layer later today for thunderstorms.

Today: Partial sunshine, hot and humid. High near 90. A few thunderstorms will develop late this afternoon and may impact Connecticut any time from 4-11 pm this evening — some of these may be near severe levels with damaging winds and heavy rain. Gusty southwest winds 9-13 mph.

Tonight: Thunderstorms ending during the evening with clearing overnight, warm and uncomfortably humid. Patchy fog. Lows 68-72. Southwest wind 5-10 mph.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny and very hot, not as humid. High 94.

Tomorrow night: Clear, and mild. Low near 68.

Sunday: Mostly sunny and warm with highs 87-91. Humidity builds at night.

Monday: Hazy hot and humid with scattered thunderstorms developing from the late afternoon into the early evening. High near 92.
